Last year as I watched Debra Bowen being sworn in as Secretary of State I couldn’t help but feel this was a momentous achievement in history. As Secretary of State, Debra Bowen would be heading the governmental body in California responsible for overseeing voter rights and the accountability of the State’s electoral process. […]

Spotlight on Nancy Skinner

While attending UC Berkeley, I ran the ASUC student body elections and that is where I first met Nancy Skinner who was a candidate for Academic Affairs. Nancy was a young woman who had already recognized her future in the political arena. Nancy won that election to become Vice President of the ASUC […]

Reverse the Decline!

As the June 3rd primary approaches, it is vital that we as voters take stock of the tremendous decline in our elected women here in California. In 2008, ten female legislators, 7 Democrats and 3 Republicans, will be lost due to term limits. This could seriously affect our pool of elected women which is […]

Meet Linda Harris-Forster — AD-52

As the founder of the CALIFORNIA LIST helping women get elected is my mission and my privilege. I’m always on the look out for that special candidate who believes in her community, sees what needs to be done, and sets her mind to getting things done in the California legislature. About a year ago, […]

HUNGER FOR CHANGE

This election has revved up our political process unlike anything we have seen in decades. Across the country, Democrats are showing up to participate in campaigns, and voting in record numbers. Women are voting in record numbers!
Believe it or not, on June 3rd it will be California’s time to vote again in our State primary. […]

PAY OFF OF THE PIPELINE

Jackie Speier’s election yesterday to the House of Representatives shows the importance of building a pipeline of qualified women working their way up the ladder of elected office. We are excited to extend warm congratulations to newly elected congressional incumbent Jackie Speier. Jackie won the California Congressional 12th District seat running away with 78% […]

A Woman’s Educational Prerogative

A recession? A depression? The disparaging financial news released this week makes us all pause and question what our financial future really, truly looks like.
Living here in California, we know we are in serious trouble. I believe that we do not fully understand the full extent of what kind of impact our $14 […]

Debra Bowen
DEBRA BOWEN
California’s 30th
Secretary of State

A pioneer in open government reform, election integrity, and personal privacy rights, Debra Bowen became only the sixth woman in California history elected to a statewide constitutional office when she was elected as Secretary of State in November 2006.

As the chief elections officer for the largest state in the nation, Secretary Bowen is responsible for overseeing state and federal elections, a role that also requires her to test and certify the voting equipment used in California.

Secretary Bowen is also responsible for helping to carry out election laws and campaign disclosure requirements by maintaining a statewide database of registered voters, certifying the official lists of candidates for each election, tracking and certifying ballot initiatives, compiling election returns, and certifying the election results for all state and federal contests.

Beyond her role as the state’s chief elections officer, Secretary of State Bowen is charged with managing a number of other programs for the people of California. She is committed to carrying out all of her responsibilities in an open, transparent fashion that opens up government and builds people’s confidence in our democracy.
